- Who
- Ghazaleh, an Iranian woman in Denmark. Only her first name is public, for her safety.
- What
- Danish authorities have rejected her asylum case. She has been told to leave for Iran by 21 October 2026.
- Why now
- Denmark paused Iranian asylum cases and departure deadlines in January 2026 because of the situation in Iran. In August 2026 the Refugee Appeals Board lifted the pause for about 108 people already refused.
- The danger
- Iran executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, including 48 women, the highest figures in decades (Iran Human Rights/ECPM). The UN Fact-Finding Mission found crimes against humanity in the January 2026 crackdown, and in 2024 found that detained women were raped and sexually abused.
- Political angle
- In March 2026 Radikale Venstre, now in Denmark's coalition government, called for returns to Iran to be paused indefinitely (DR, 2 March 2026).
- The ask
- That Denmark does not return Ghazaleh, reviews her case in the light of current conditions, and restores its pause on returns to Iran.
